JUDGING FROM ITS unfortunate title, A Merciful End: The Euthanasia Movement in Modern America would appear to be just another in the dreary collection of recent books extolling assisted suicide as a curative to the tyranny of modern medical paternalism and a necessary adjunct to the right of personal autonomy.
