Marco Santoro, in his short but insightful preface to the special volume of Esperienze letterarie dedicated to the memory of Cesare Pavese on the 50th anniversary of his passing, refers to Pavese as "uno degli intellettuali piu interessanti" on the Italian cultural and literary scene of the twentieth century. "Interessante" is an interesting and astute choice of adjectives to describe this novelist, poet, essayist, expert of foreign literatures (especially American), translator, editor, and cultural broker during the fascist ventennio and the years immediately following World War II.
