THE Zambian government has signed a 20-year concession worth $US 5 billion for the operation of Zambian Railways (ZR) with a consortium of New Limpopo Bridge Projects Investments (NLB1) and Spoornet, South Africa The consortium will pay the government $US 253 million a year and 5% of turnover each quarter in return for operating and modernising the 1271km 1067mm-gauge railway.
Although the infrastructure will remain government owned, the consortium plans to invest $US 20 million during the first two years to upgrade track, communications, and rolling stock, followed by a further $US 60 million during the rest of the concession.
