ONALASKA -- An archaeologist has discovered evidence two cultures may have intermingled in a valley along the Mississippi River 1,000 years ago -- a rare find he believes may impact how historians interpret Wisconsin archaeology.
Robert Boszhardt, a regional archaeologist from UW-La Crosse's Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, found two distinct cultural pottery types at the same hearth.
Bulldozers preparing land for a subdivision near Onalaska unearthed the pottery.
"We never expected to find anything like this," Boszhardt said. "It took us completely by surprise."
