Congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act, which outlawed growing or using marijuana by anyone except birdseed suppliers. King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne and married Wallis Warfield Simpson. The rhumba was introduced. And W.G. Barnard invented the first blender and called it the Vita-Mix.

Twelve years later, Barnard's son Bill pondered the new entertainment medium called television and figured it was perfect for selling something like the Vita-Mix, which needed demonstration to explain its features to prospective buyers.
