Three warnings: first, this book is not intended for the uninitiated. Its intellectual discourse is airtight at almost every page. You blink and miss a beat, you will have to back up some, and then jump in again. Second warning: Italianists will probably feel more comfortable with the second part of the book (on Leopardi, pp. 63-111), Germanists will find the first part on Heine more absorbable (pp. 9-62), as the author does not concede basic introductory material to orient the reader, but rather assumes that the reader is already prepared for this challenging analytical itinerary.
