Apr. 29--Charleston Gazette reporters Eric Eyre and Scott Finn have won the nation's top prize for education reporting for their investigation of West Virginia's decadelong consolidation program that closed hundreds of smaller schools.
The Education Writers Association chose "Closing Costs" for the 2002 Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting. Eyre and Finn received a $1,000 cash prize and a plaque during an awards banquet Saturday night in Chicago.
