It's nearly 8 on a Tuesday night and 18-year-old Erica Schmitt could be at home, cheering her favorite American Idol contestant or carefully selecting the perfect outfit for school the next day.
Instead, she's huddled in the corner of a rehearsal room at the Lamont School of Music on the University of Denver campus. Perched on a stool, she cradles between her legs a huge, string bass that dwarfs her thin, youthful frame.
Schmitt's head bops happily to a beat as she strums away, seemingly oblivious to the cacophony of dissonant surrounding sounds.
