NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2003

Standard & Poor's--Corporate credit quality in Japan worsened slightly in the first quarter compared to a quarter earlier, even though the pace of downgrades dropped significantly compared with the average pace seen a year ago, said a report released today from Standard & Poor's Ratings Services.

The ratings outlook still remains stymied by several negative factors, including a persistently weak economy, continued deflation, and dull profitability.
