Judges, volunteers and social workers Sunday night will converge on the Kane County Judicial Center armed with sand, paper bags and tea lights.
Their mission: raise awareness of child abuse and neglect in the 16th Judicial Circuit.
They will do it by lighting 1,017 luminaria - one for each reported case of child abuse or neglect in the past year in Kane, Kendall or DeKalb counties.
"Our goal is that people recognize that there is child abuse and neglect and that they recognize that they're the ones who have to stop it," said Peggy Carey, one of the organizers of Sunday's "Light Up the Night for Kids" event.
