The US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued a so-called final record of decision last week paving the way for the drilling of tens of thousands of new coalbed methane wells on federal land in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana.
The move was hailed by the oil and gas industry as an important step toward boosting domestic natural gas supplies, but ranching and environmental groups have filed suit in federal court seeking greater protection of the area's water resources.
