May 5--HILLAH, Iraq--People moved over the uneven ground like ants on an anthill, so thick that it was hard to see what they were staring at: 35 piles of bones, skulls, hair, and clothes, laid out in two rows.
Three days ago, residents of this town an hour's drive south of Baghdad started digging in a dusty field they had long suspected was the site of mass executions and burials. Yesterday, they were still scratching at the ground with their hands, with shovels, with rough scraps of metal.
