A consultant hired by Onondaga County estimated the county will need less than a third of the 20,000 hotel rooms the developer of Destiny USA plans to build for visitors to the $2.2 billion retail and entertainment center.

In a report delivered to the county in December, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP said about 6,500 new hotel rooms will be needed to meet the lodging demand that will be created by Destiny USA.

Two months earlier, Destiny USA officials said they planned to build 20,000 hotel rooms at the lakefront megacenter - with tax-free financing and a host of property tax exemptions and state income tax credits.
