Executives from the New York Clearing House and the Chicago Clearing House, which have announced their intentions to merge this summer, say their move anticipates a day when the nation's many local check-clearing hubs will be consolidated.
"As long as paper checks exist, there will be a need for hubs," said Jeff Neubert, the president and chief executive officer of the New York Clearing House, which now does business under the name the Clearing House. "But that doesn't mean we need to have management teams spread across the country. We envision a time when, in a perfect world, there will be a national clearing house that will oversee the entire U.S. system."
