EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - They are the defending Eastern Conference champions, playing a flashy, exciting brand of basketball to boot.
Yet deep down, the New Jersey Nets remain what they've always been, the orphans of the metropolis.
Whether they were in the ABA or NBA, despite 35 years of existence in the New York area, the Nets have never really managed to put down roots in the big city's sporting soil.
They've been restless suburbanites living on the fringes of the tri-state area, from Piscataway to Long Island.
