COTTAGE GROVE - One couldn't wait. It escaped the pack.

It was an orange balloon, the color of "Sumer," and it floated straight toward the sun on a day as warm and breezy as the name she was given at birth.

They said goodbye Thursday afternoon to their homecoming queen, to the tiny girl with the big heart and the face as sweet as sunshine.

After a memorial service at Riverside Community Church of God, 1,000 people, maybe more, stood in the church's parking lot and released the other 499 balloons in honor of Sumer Solesbee, their daughter, granddaughter, cousin, teammate, classmate and friend.
