For over 20 years now, Chicago's MacArthur Foundation has given out its famous MacArthur Fellowships: $500,000, no-strings-attached grants intended to encourage interesting and creative work. With a very few exceptions--such as former AEI fellow Robert Woodson--the grants have gone to ivory tower academics (many of them doing important work) and left-leaning community activists.
