Could Ford Motor Co.'s broken pledge on SUV fuel economy actually improve the industry's bargaining position in the debate over fuel consumption?
That idea has been making its way through industry lobbying circles. The thinking: Ford's backpedaling reinforces a broadly held industry position. That view is that dramatic increases in fuel economy are extremely difficult to accomplish without making vehicles less desirable or more expensive for customers.
So Ford, in a sense, has rejoined the pack.
