When Minnie Steininger moved from Austria to Naperville in 1920, she didn't speak a word of English.

The 10-year-old girl, her mother and sisters had just endured six harrowing years stranded in World War I-era Europe while her father tried to start a life here. Though they were happy to finally be reunited with the family patriarch, they didn't know how they ever would fit into life in Naperville.
