In "Sappho's Leap," the voice of the crone _ perhaps the feistiest, bawdiest crone ever _ is heard throughout the land. The irrepressible Erica Jong, celebrating the 30th anniversary of her groundbreaking "Fear of Flying," comes now with a fictionalized account of the life of the legendary lyric poet who lived 2,600 years ago.
The book opens on a dramatic note, with the 50-year-old Sappho climbing a hill, planning to jump off a cliff. She laments that her youth is gone and that her vanity is not, noting that her hair has gone gray and her makeup does not disguise her wrinkles. Sappho also is concerned with her reputation.
