PHILADELPHIA _ In 1920, painter Marc Chagall became set and costume designer for the newly formed Soviet Yiddish Theater. He was, to say the least, artistically inspired by his new position: In an intense, 40-day burst of activity, he created a series of murals and paintings that covered every inch of the walls and foyer of the small theater. These works have come to be recognized as some of the most significant of his long career.
