fifteen poems
Sweat
My dogs are pulling, me around the block,
Mailbox by mailbox. Their sense of smell is
So superior to mine that I have to brag
My brain's so big, I'm just taking my nose for a walk.
They can whiff the Mexican river-mud and sweat
From the bricks, the salt breeze rising from the Japanese metal,
The jungle rot of mahogany, the Asian jasmine and Malaysian
Tires, the Portland cement and Chinese bolts.
They can sniff what dog's in love with what dog isn't,
The way the fly on the lip of my beer glass smells a sweaty
horse in Dusseldorf in the back of a German brewery.
It's good to be the Alpha of the pack, Odysseus lashed by
