Devon Energy -- which recently completed its acquisition of Ocean Energy to become the largest US independent producer - - is stepping up the pace of its gas drilling program in the prolific Barnett Shale play in North Texas.
Encouraged by the success of its early tests with horizontal drilling, Devon said on Thursday that it is expanding the program to 16 rigs from 14. Six of the rigs will be dedicated exclusively to drilling horizontal wells.
"The Barnett Shale has grown to become Devon's largest property. It now accounts for 13% of our total company-wide oil and gas production and that percentage is continuing to grow," Chief Executive Larry Nichols ...
