Nestle's efforts to build a world ice cream empire have paid off in Europe and Asia, but have hit a snag in the United States, where the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has come out against the Swiss food conglomerate's acquisition of Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream.
A Jan. 23 agreement with the Swiss Movenpick Group to acquire the Movenpick brand for ice cream products and related ice cream businesses worldwide (with the exception of the New Zealand manufacturing operations) was hailed by the business press as putting Nestle right up there with the Anglo-Dutch Unilever in the battle for the world ice cream market.
