Today the Campbell County Jail sits at Central and Sixth streets in Newport, but for 130 years a captive crowd of another kind filled that corner of Newport.
The site was home for a number of schools over the years, including elementary school, high school and a Head Start program.
It is unclear exactly when a school first began on Central Avenue though records show a school in operation there as early as 1867.
By 1875 a school called the Cabot Street School operated at the location. The Ticket Newspaper on Nov.9, 1875, noted the resignation of educator W. C. Dunkhorst from the Cabot Street School. A Ticket account on ...
