Far from a great novelist, John Richardson might with some exaggeration make it all the way to the respectable minors. Yet no student of Canadian fiction can ignore him. Whatever his failings as a writer from a belles-lettristic standpoint, his contributions to a national literary culture deserve the considerable attention that they have received.
