Sen. Orrin G. Hatch has wisely abandoned his effort to repeal the sunset provisions in the USA Patriot Act, which gave law enforcement vast new powers after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Hatch's proposal should be buried in a deep grave that has plenty of future room for many of the frightening anti-terrorism powers of the Patriot Act. For many Americans, both liberal and conservative, the law symbolizes the erosion of constitutional rights in this country.
