On the evening of Dec. 8, 2002, Super Typhoon Pongsona slammed into the island of Guam with winds exceeding 180 mph. In its aftermath, it left a path of destruction and devastation.
Like everywhere else on the island, Navy Exchange facilities were damaged from the high winds and driving rain. Through the extraordinary efforts of the NEX Guam district and store managers, associates as well as the members of the Navy Exchange Service Command's (NEXCOM) Crisis Action Team (CAT) and the Navy, Navy Exchange facilities were quickly reopened to help Sailors and their families stationed in Guam put their homes and lives back together.
