THE new CEO and president of Amtrak, Mr David Gunn, is already starting to make his mark on the United States' troubled long-distance passenger operator. This is while the US Congress continues to debate the future of Amtrak.
In his first of three letters to employees, Gunn said on May 21 that he is committed to a national system, and will not participate in the dismemberment of Amtrak. "I am committed to restoring the existing system to a state of good repair as a first priority," Gunn said. "I will create a lean, competent management. We will not be self-sufficient, but we must increase our cost recovery."
