This is a superbly written and brilliantly researched book. Fissel "examines English land warfare from 1511 to 1642, blending narrative with thematic explanations of topics such as the military obligation and logistics" (p. xi). He deals with three major questions: Was there an "English way of war?" How expert were English soldiers "in the practice of arms" by 1642?
