The fatal explosion on September 21, 2001 at the Toulouse complex of Grande Paroisse, the fertilizers subsidiary of Atofina, continues to cast a long shadow over France's chemical industry. Spending on safety in France's chemical sector grew substantially last year "to the detriment of investments for expansion," says industry association UIC (Paris).
