The Legislature returned to work for a special session that began yesterday, one day after closing its regular session without passing a handful of appropriation bills needed to make up the next two-year budget.

Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who called the special session, said if a conference committee made up of House and Senate members from both parties doesn't reach a final agreement by tonight, he would ask legislative leaders to enter negotiations aimed at resolving their differences.
