A German Member of the European Parliament (MEP) on the EP's delegation for relations with Russia has launched a withering attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin for allegedly switching the festivities for the birthday of Russian "exclave" Kaliningrad to mark its "Soviet" anniversary, rather than the town's original founding spanning its long German history. Gabriele Stauner (EPP-ED, D) explains that the town of Kaliningrad - as K?nigsberg, she points out, German for more than seven centuries - was due to celebrate its 750th birthday on September 1, 2003.
