Article: FOREX - AUSTRALIAN DOLLAR OPENS WEAKER - MAY 20, 2003.

SYDNEY, May 20 Asia Pulse - The Australian dollar opened slightly weaker today, slipping backwards after again testing the $US0.6600 level in early New York trade last night.

At 0700 AEST the Australian dollar was at $US0.6537/42 from yesterday's close 0.6564/69

Although the local currency has eased it is still sitting more than one US cent above Friday's close of 0.6411/16.

Yesterday the Australian dollar hit a a high of $US0.6620, a level not seen since January 24, 2000.

In overnight trade the local unit moved back to just under .6600 as the euro again made gains at the expense of the weakening US dollar.
