The adage of artist helping artist inspired Kathy Cochran when she heard about the plight of Smithfield, the painting potbellied pig from Midlothian, Va.
Smithfield, who has been creating abstract paintings for community and charitable events throughout eastern Virginia for the past five years, is undergoing treatment for nasal cancer.
Although Smithfield's surgery in late April had gone well, medical bills were piling up for his owner, Fran Martin, a single mother who teaches school in Chesterfield County.
