According to a group of beef researchers at the University of Kentucky, there is currently a lot of interest in the effects of dietary fat and dietary energy, on the reproductive performance of cattle, but most research on the topic has used multiparous cows with little work being done with virgin heifers.

The group, including C.M. Howlett, E.S. Vanzant, L.H. Anderson, W.R. Burr, J. Randolph and R.F. Bapst, also noted that few of these studies have actually looked at reproductive performance (e.g., conception rates) and instead concentrated on ovarian function and hormone levels.
