Middle East.
The development of the Middle East situation dominated the Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Foreign Ministers being held near Heraklion, Crete, on May 26 and 27. It was also attended by the 10 EU candidate countries. The EU repeated its support for the peace process and not least the provisions in the road map which both the Palestinians and Israelis have approved. The EU called on the two sides to apply the road map as quickly as possible. Its provisions include confidence-building measures, and the end to violence by both the Israeli and Palestinian sides and the resumption of talks on a series of problematic issues.
