Why do youth do what they do in their free time? If you ask them, typical answers are "I have to," "I want to," or "There is nothing else to do." These simple answers belie the complexity of motivation. Understanding and measuring motivation in terms of adult behavior is difficult enough, but during adolescence the developmental processes through which youth evolve compound this complexity. The purpose of the current study was to advance the measurement of motivation in the free time domain by testing the factorial validity of a multidimensional scale grounded in Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory (1985, Ryan & Deci, 2000).
