New England Brewing Co., Connecticut's oldest and largest microbrewery, ceased production and was sold in August 2001, along with the brewery's sister business, the Brewhouse Restaurant. Opened in February 1990 in Norwalk by Marcia and Dick King, New England Brewing (NEB) was the state's second microbrewery, opening a year after New Haven Brewing (a.k.a. Elm City Brewing, which closed in 1998). NEB moved to spacious quarters in South Norwalk in 1995 when the Kings bought and lovingly renovated an old factory building, using half the space for the brewery and the other half for the Brewhouse Restaurant, a brewpub-style restaurant that sold NEB beers exclusively.
