American author Valerie Martin has won the Orange Prize for Fiction 2003 with her novel Property (Abacus), the story of political and personal freedom in America's deep south in the early nineteenth century. The Au30,000 prize and the 'Bessie' , a limited edition figurine, were presented to the author at a ceremony at Lincoln's Inn Fields by Chair of Judges, Ahdaf Soueif. Both prizes are anonymously endowed.
