It now appears that the looters who ransacked the Baghdad Museum after the invasion of the city by US troops got away with considerably less than was first thought. Teams of American investigators searching the city have recovered more than 700 artefacts and tens of thousands of ancient manuscripts previously held at The Iraq National Museum. These were stored in unde0ground vaults for safe keeping, probably before US troops arrived in the city. However, despite the finds, which are believed to include a broken statue of an Assyrian king, dating back to 900BC, the losses and the damage inflicted on relics of Iraq's ancient heritage remains phenomenal by any standards.
