Jun. 4--BINGHAM CANYON, Utah--One of the world's most monumental mines is celebrating its 100th birthday today.
Located in the Oquirrh mountains, the Bingham Canyon Mine has yielded about 17 million tons of copper, 23 million ounces of gold, 190 million ounces of silver and 890 million pounds of molybdenum since it began in 1903.
The cumulative value of the metals far exceeds that of the Comstock Lode, Klondike and California gold rushes combined, said Louie Cononelos, director of public affairs for Kennecott Utah Copper Corp.
