Ford Motor Co. plans to make side curtain airbags available in two minivans and two other family vehicles in the next 18 months.

The airbags will be available on the 2004 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans and the 2005 Ford Five Hundred sedan and Freestyle sport wagon, says Phil Martens, Ford vice president of North American product creation. On the minivans, the airbags will cover all three rows of seating.

Side curtains are commonly available on luxury vehicles. With consumers concerned about rollovers and head injuries, side curtains are spreading down-market.
