Maybe it's because I'm back in Texas where I was raised pretty much in a corridor known as tornado alley, but I have been thinking lately of how puny our people-made structures seem to be in the face of nature. As I write this, the mid-west has experienced more violent storms and death-wielding tornados than at any time in its history. How does a population defend itself from these admittedly natural, yet devastatingly powerful calamities?
