Once, buildings were just buildings, and there were no "building systems." Heating, if any, was provided by fireplaces and stoves; ventilation and "air conditioning" came from open windows; plumbing consisted of a pump in front and a privy Out back; and electricity was a force of nature best avoided by means of lightning rods on the high points of roofs and chimneys--interior spaces were illuminated by candles or oil lamps. All that changed in the industrialized West between the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s.
