Since the time of the Egyptian pyramids, and perhaps before, designers have etched 2D plans in the sand (or on parchment or on a drafting table or on a computer screen), and then builders have taken the documents and done their best to fathom what the designer had in mind.

Fast forward to the technology age and you have the potential for much more information to be passed along downstream to the folks who have to figure out a designer's intent. Even at a time when designers have done their preliminary work on a PC, the builders generally follow a 2D printout of a design plan, and we're suddenly back in the kind of process followed by the Egyptians.
