Atlantic Beach, N.C., May Continue Fighting for Free Sand.

Jun. 5--ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C.-- Atlantic Beach may continue to fight for free sand at the risk of loosing it.

Bogue Banks towns have joined with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a proposal to nourish the island for half a century. If the plan is approved, sand would hit the beaches at the end of this decade.

But Atlantic Beach has received free sand from a nearby spoil island, named Brandt Island, twice since 1986. Some in town want to keep that arrangement regardless of the 50-year plan, but many on the Carteret County Beach Commission say that seems unlikely.
