Every year, children and adults die or suffer traumatic brain injuries on the beach and in the snow. Last year, Oprah Winfrey featured the story of 17-year-old Matthew Gauruder, who suffocated after falling head-first into a hole on the beach.

"If your head is in the sand, it can collapse on you and you may not be able to get out," says Dr. Sue Nondahl, a local pediatrician.

Young kids, of course, are most vulnerable, because of their size and their hands-on style of play. Most accidents occur as a result of tunneling through wet (and therefore heavier) sand or snow. To prevent accidents, Nondahl suggests these safety tips:
