Most visitors to New Zealand are drawn by the mountains, the rocky shores and the Maori culture, but the cities--like the mountains and forests--tend to be clean, well kept and scaled just perfectly for walking.
Wellington, the political and artistic capital, is a small city beautifully situated between a harbor and Mount Victoria. In the past few years, it has developed its port, turning obsolete cargo piers into a sprawling waterfront area that is a promenade of shops, eateries and cultural venues, boasting some 300 cafes and restaurants in an area of less than 1.5 miles across.
