Jun. 7--Recently unemployed with two children in college, Jason Rauch of West Islip was already wincing at a $2,100-a-year auto insurance premium when the renewal arrived in March -- for more than $2,600, a hike of nearly 25 percent.

"I fell off my chair," the 48-year-old said, baffled because no one on the policy had tickets, accidents or any other problem that might raise the rate.

Rauch is not alone. Policyholders across the state and around the country have been feeling the pinch as bills arrive in their mailboxes with double-digit percentage ...
